1) Skills that a content writer should have

It’s not an easy task to fulfill every single demand of your client and work according to your client’s perspective. Well, if you succeed in bringing all the adaptations according to your client’s work, then congratulations, you have adopted the real meaning of content writing. We know that every single writer has their writing sense and Writing style. Still, if he knows how to improvise his writing style and tone according to his client’s demands, he will become a great writer.

Adding value to your content

Another important thing that a content writer must have is providing value-added information in every piece that he writes. It means that if a reader has read this blog to the end and gained some information from this post, it is a value-added post, which is what great writers do.

You can take a look at one of the most prominent bloggers or websites to understand how to write value-added blog posts. Some of the few great examples are Business Insider, Neil Patel, backlinko, and such kinds of websites.

Must have a firm grip on grammar

Let’s talk about grammatical mistakes that most writers make during their initial stages as content writers. Now there are different tools and methods to eradicate such issues. One of the most recommended blogging tools by most writers and myself is Grammarly.

Grammarly is a great tool to eradicate the basic grammatical and punctuation mistakes from your content. I have written a complete article on utilizing Grammarly to stop and remove every error from your range, either a grammatical mistake or a structural issue. It is indeed a great tool for editing your website content. You check out this article for editing your blog content.

I am Muhammad Musa Mubashar, a veterinarian by profession. I have utilized my work in the blogging and writing industry; I have a pet blog called Puffy meows, basically about cats. What does that mean? It simply means that I have utilized my veterinary profession as an opportunity and leverage it to create a pet blog and write informational and commercial articles on that website.

3) Take a content writing course

Most people still think that they can learn all things from YouTube or by writing articles and stuff like that, but now, in my opinion, it’s not valid to some extent. You must have a mentor who can guide you properly in every matter, give you a proper direction in whichever field you are going through, and help you build a great personality.

Similarly, it is your writing mentor who can guide you through every tiny detail about content writing. You can start your writing career from scratch and make yourself professional enough to enter the freelance marketplace.

4) Building samples and portfolio: Content writing guide

When you have learned everything you need to know about content writing, it’s time to build samples and portfolios that you can show to your clients before getting work from them. There are many ways to develop samples and portfolios.

You can write your samples in Google Docs or Microsoft Word and send them to your clients who are willing to see your previous work.

Another great and better version of showcasing your previous work is publishing your articles on different websites and asking the website owners to put your name as an author’s name on that particular article or blog post.

You have to go to various websites and contact the editors or blog owners to write a blog post for their blog. You can build 5 to 10 blog posts or samples in that particular fashion. When you are done completing all those samples, showcase these samples to your clients. It will leave a positive and significant impact on your clients.

Write, write and write

The more you write, the more chances to make yourself a better and professional content writer in the market. We all are well aware of the quote, Practice makes a man perfect. I observed and experimented with this quote, and you know what this works. There is a solid reason behind this cause when we keep writing again and again and proofreading our content daily, we get a chance to see the mistakes we make daily. If we improve one mistake day by day, we will become great writers in three to four months.

Build your portfolio website

I must suggest to all my students and new content writers who entered in the journey of freelance content writers to make their portfolio website to publish their previous work and showcase it to their clients.

I have a whole blog post in which you will learn how to create a blog or website from scratch. Another important cool thing about building your portfolio website is making a blog section in your portfolio website and publishing all your best samples on that block section.

In this way, whenever a client wants to visit your portfolio, guide them to your website, and they will see each and everything they need to see as your previous work.

You can make a mini-portfolio website by going to the website contently and add your sample articles there. Whenever someone demands a portfolio from you. You can just send them the website link.

Start hunting clients

Just recall everything you have read and see if anything is missing that you haven’t done, then do it because it’s time to hunt clients.

There are a lot of methods to find freelance writing clients. You can search for these clients on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and freelancing platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. These platforms are beneficial, but some websites also offer freelance writing jobs to apply and work as freelance content writers.

Social media is a great way to grab your first few clients. You can share your writer’s profile with your friends and family connected on your social networks.

Through Social Platforms

Either Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or WhatsApp. It will help you grow your writing network and build a few connections. After getting one or two clients from your friends or family, they will refer you to other people, creating an interlinked network of your clients and your friends.

Using freelancing platforms

Apart from these social networks, you can build your profile on freelancing platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. In these platforms, you will get a chance to showcase all of your work and your past experiences in front of your clients.

There will be several job posts every single day on these platforms. You have to build an excellent fiber profile or build an upper profile. After creating a professional profile, you have to send proposals and apply to these jobs placed on these freelancing platforms. I have also established a complete guide on building your profile on Upwork and start making money on it.

These platforms and social networks can help you find new clients, but there are a couple of other online websites to apply to and get potential leads. Some of the essential websites for finding freelance writing jobs are flex jobs and freelance writers den.

Learn the art of pitching

When you have built all your samples, and now it’s time to pitch new clients to work with them, you must keep a few things in mind while pitching your clients.

It will help to put the most precise and accurate information and add stories and irrelevant stuff you don’t want. Check out my guide on how to pitch your freelance writing clients.

Always try to convince your client in such a way that only you can solve their problem. So try to pitch them by providing them the solution to their problems instead of praising yourself or applauding your writing skills.

You should also try to add one of the best works you have recently done in your pitch. I prefer to add links to your previous work that have been published on different websites instead of adding them in Word document or PDF format. Links look more appealing when you try to represent your published content instead of documented form, positively impacting your clients.

Bottom Line

I have tried to demonstrate the essential guide you need to read before opting for a content writer as your freelance career.

You need to do a few things repeatedly to make yourself proficient enough to be known as a professional content writer. Reading and writing are the main things that every writer should practice. The more you read, the better your chances of making verbal analysis and getting an idea of the writer’s perspective and all such things.

On the other hand, writing will make you proficient day by day. When you write, again and again, your chances of making mistakes will be lesser every new time you write something. Pick a niche, build samples and start hunting clients.
